A good old soak in the tub is the cure-all for pretty much any ailment, but sometimes you need to step things up a notch to give your body and brain a really intense detox.
Whether you use essential oils, salt, vinegar or a combination of different things, you can create a detox bath to leave you feeling rejuvenated, giving your body the boost it needs.
We’ve got a few hints and tips for how to draw the perfect bath, so your end-of-the-day relaxation session can rid you of any toxins and soothe your mind before a good night’s sleep.
A word about safety
Detox baths are great for alleviating a number of aches and pains, but if you’ve got an existing condition such as heart disease or diabetes, or if you are pregnant, check with your doctor before having one to see if they have any recommendations for certain materials to use.
Take care getting out of the tub when you’re done – stand up slowly and wrap up in a fluffy towel. Detox baths can leave you feeling a little bit light-headed, so don’t jump out in a hurry! If you’re applying anything to your skin afterwards – deodorant, moisturisers, etc. – make sure they are natural and chemical-free. You don’t want to undo all the detoxing goodness of your bath!
Before any detox bath, we suggest you have a sizeable gulp of water. Detox baths are supposed to make you sweat while you lose all those nasty toxins, so do yourself a favour and hydrate yourself before you get in the tub.
Don’t eat immediately before your bath and leave it a little while before you snack again once you’re out. Another big drink of water immediately afterwards will be good for you, though, and if you think you need to drink some during, have small sips rather than big gulps so your body doesn’t have to work hard digesting.
Tap water inevitably carries a few chemicals, so if you want to neutralise it, then pop a cup of bicarbonate of soda into the mix. Not only will it purify the water, but it’s also a great little stress-buster – ideal for your detox.
How long to soak for
We recommend soaking for between 20 and 30 minutes to get the full benefits of your detox. Don’t stay in the bath for more than half an hour, though, as you could risk overheating. If you think the soothing scents will leave you likely to snooze, set an alarm to stay on the safe side.
If you’re new to detox-bathing, stick to one or two a week until you get used to the feeling.
When to detox
Detoxing can leave you feeling a bit worn out once you’ve got out of the bath so, at first, we suggest scheduling time for your bath in the evening so that once you are out, you can wind down for the evening and continue relaxing in bed.
Once you are accustomed to how detoxing makes you feel, you can start having these baths whenever they suit you, whether that’s morning, noon or night!
Ingredients to use
This little beauty is the key to a successful detox. Not only does it ease stress and migraines, but it works wonders for helping you sleep, keeping your muscles healthy and improving your concentration levels.
Pour two cups of Epsom salt into your bath along with five to 10 drops of essential oils (we’ll cover which oils are good for which ailments later on!). Give it all a stir and make sure the water is hot – remember, you want to be sweating! Don’t make it too hot though – you want to enjoy your soak as well as reap the health benefits, so keep it just as hot as you can tolerate for 20-30 minutes.
Thermaform baths will retain the heat really well, which will enhance how efficiently you can entice those toxins out of your body. If you’re serious about your detoxing, then a Thermaform bath could be the perfect addition to your bathroom.
Sea salt is a great natural detoxing ingredient and has been used since ancient times to help people rejuvenate. Remember, you’re after natural sea salt here, nothing that’s been chemically modified, in order to give you the best cleanse possible.
This will give you an energy boost that will make you feel more alert and perky throughout your day, making this a good one to have if you’re soaking in the morning. It also soothes irritated skin, which – combined with the hot water to open your pores – works as a pretty fantastic facial.
In terms of quantity, you want ¼ cup each of sea salt, Epsom salt, and bicarbonate of soda, all mixed together to give you a super-soothing soak.
Apple cider vinegar
If you want to give your joints some attention, apple cider vinegar is the best form of TLC you can get. It’s ideal for anyone suffering from arthritis or conditions caused by inflammation. Pour 1/3 cup of this in along with the ingredients listed in the sea salt bath and give your muscles a good soak.
For a detox bath that will really get you sweating, all you need is a sprinkling of ginger. If you love the feeling of being in a sauna or steam room, then this is the ingredient for you.
This is ideal if you can feel a cold coming on, as it will help you sweat out the toxins that are causing you to feel poorly, while it can also improve digestion and reduce nausea.
A teaspoon of ginger powder with hot water will be enough to ensure a thorough detoxing. Make sure you drink plenty of water afterwards to keep hydrated.
Depending on what effect you want your bath to have, you can choose from a number of essential oils to detox effectively:
- Lavender will relax you and improve your mood
- Lemon will give your body an overall cleanse
- Rosemary is great for relieving a headache
- Tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial, so it’s perfect if you need a detox after a long plane journey or anywhere else you can pick up a lot of germs
Five to 10 drops of the oil of your choice will be perfect with some Epsom salts (see above), or if you want a less intense detox experience, they can be added to hot water on their own.
Tip: These can also make a very nice decorative piece, since essential oils often have naturally vivid colouring. Mount these on a shelf or in a basket to make them a feature of your bathroom and show off how well you look after your body.
Whether you’ve got a particular ache or pain, or you just want to give yourself a big boost of energy, a detox bath can be the perfect solution. Keep yourself fully hydrated and let your muscles relax in the hot water while you soak your way to feeling incredible.
